Eastern Forest Partnership

Take Action

Congress will finalize its conservation spending plan for FY07 over this summer and fall, including funding levels for the Forest Legacy Program that has protected more than a million forested acres from development nationwide, including many of the crown jewels of the eastern forests. Through our Legacy Forests Campaign, the Partnership is working to move Forest Legacy funding to the level of current demand—now $200 to $300 million annually—by 2011. In order to achieve this lofty goal, we are urging Congress to fund the Forest Legacy Program in FY07 at a level that meets or exceeds the President’s request of $61 million. This would be an increase in funding over FY06 and cover 31 critically important forest conservation projects across the nation.

Although the House has already approved a disastrous proposed cut in Forest Legacy to just $9.3 million of new money for FY07, there is still time for both House and Senate members to influence the final allocation. We are encouraging interested organizations to communicate to members of Congress their strong support for Forest Legacy and the need for increased funding. Organizations can also join our planned sign-on letter to the House-Senate conference committee that will set the final Forest Legacy funding level. To join our letter, please contact Jad Daley at 802-253-8227 X13 or coordinator@easternforest.org
